Nowruz (Persian New Year) · Spring Equinox
At the beginning of the Persian new year, families gather around a Haft-Seen table.
Tonight, those tables are being set in Tehran, Kabul, Istanbul, Toronto, and Nairobi.
Seven objects are placed carefully on a cloth.
Each begins with the letter S in Persian.
Seven objects.
Each one a symbol.
Wheat sprouts for renewal.
Sweet pudding for strength.
Apple for health.
Dried lotus for love.
Garlic for medicine.
Sumac for patience.
Vinegar for wisdom.
Seven small objects.
Seven quiet hopes for the year ahead.
Because a new year is not only something that happens to us.
These seven are reminders that a new year is not only something that arrives.
It is something that is chosen.
What does this year require of you?
The table looks simple.
But it asks a quiet question.
What kind of year are you preparing yourself to live?
It is something we step into.
The table is not decoration.
It is a declaration.
Balance is not a destination. It is a moment you pass through on your way to the next thing.
The equinox doesn't stay. Tomorrow one side begins to grow again. The point of today is not to freeze it — it is to notice it. To register the moment when something shifts.
The Nowruz table is set deliberately. You choose what to carry into the new season: sprouts for growth, patience, wisdom, love. Not what you stumble into. What you declare.
What are you choosing to carry across this threshold? And what are you choosing — finally, deliberately — to leave behind?
Scripture: Ecclesiastes 3:1
✙ Prayer for the Day ✙
God of all seasons, You set the sun in its path and the stars in their courses. Today, as millions celebrate new beginnings, I bring You mine. Help me to carry only what is worth carrying. And to leave behind what has been trying to leave for a long time. In Your Name.
