Feast of St Joseph · Lent continues
We know almost nothing about Joseph (husband of Mary).
He appears briefly in the opening chapters of the Gospels.
Then he fades from the story.
Scripture tells us only a few details.
He was a carpenter.
He was a just man.
And he chose to take responsibility for a child that was not biologically his.
He never speaks a single recorded word in Scripture.
Not one sentence.
But three times in Gospel of Matthew, an angel appears to him in a dream.
Three times he is given instructions.
Three times he rises and obeys.
Immediately.
No hesitation recorded.
No speeches.
Joseph obeyed in silence.
He protected in silence.
He raised the Son of God in silence.
Sometimes the most important thing a father does is simply show up.
Faithfully.
Without applause.
Without announcement.
No explanation.
Some of the most important work in the world is done without anyone noticing.
Joseph is one of the most underrated figures in the Christian story.
He was asked to adopt a child that was not biologically his, to protect a woman whose pregnancy would invite public suspicion, and to flee with his family to Egypt on the basis of a dream.
His entire recorded obedience is contained in the phrase: "he did as the angel commanded him."
No speech. No processing. No public announcement of his sacrifice. He simply did what was asked.
We live in a culture that values articulate faith — the testimony, the sermon, the post. Joseph reminds us that there is a form of faithfulness that has no language at all. That shows up in the stable and the carpentry shop and the flight to Egypt without requiring an audience.
Are there acts of obedience God is asking of you that have no performance value whatsoever? No audience. No recognition. Just faithfulness?
Scripture: Matthew 1:24
✙ Prayer for the Day ✙
God of Joseph, I confess I have wanted the announcement more than the obedience. I have waited for the kind of calling that comes with recognition. Teach me Joseph's silence. The quiet rising. The faithful doing. The obedience that needs no applause because it knows Who it is for. In Your Name.
